26 year old Corporal Sarah Bushbye is the third woman in military history and one of the youngest to receive the military cross for extreme courage as she treated injured colleagues amid 'bullets and bombs' in a Taliban attack in Afghanistan.
Ignoring the risks of more explosions and incoming fire, she ran 500 yards across open ground to reach the men. Newlywed Sarah, of North Tyneside in The UK, heard she had won the medal while on holiday in Crete with husband Danny. She said: "I don't see myself as any heroine, I was doing my job. But it is an honour to receive it and I am very proud."
